Understand The Sermon On The Mount-D2

Continued from Understand Sermon On The Mount-D1

Isn't it something that 2,000 years after He said this stuff, it still applies? I can't tell you how many times I thought a problem I had with someone was 'their fault' only to find out I had caused it…and that was just last week. Working in ministry gives me the privilege of getting involved with the relationship problems of others. It's not a privilege because I like that kind of work, but because I can often learn from their problems instead of having to learn from my own. This tendency of ours to "fix" everyone else is never so pronounced as it is in marriage. All the married people shout "Bingo!". I believe 95 % of the marriage problems in the world would be solved if both parties would commit to one promise. All you married people, wherever you are in your relationship, go find your spouse and make this promise:

From this day forward, I'll stop finding your faults and start finding my own.

All the singles breathed a sigh of relief because I wasn't talking to them…now, I am. Go to your parents or your boss or your brother or your best friend and make the same promise. In fact, the more people we keep that promise with, the faster our foundation gets squared up. Let me share something I think Jesus implies in this teaching…the closer you get to square the less the people around you will seem out of square.

Now that we're square, we can begin the foundation.

Ask Seek Knock

2. Solid Foundation: vs 7-11 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened… If you… know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!" Since the whole building rests on the foundation, it must be solid and strong. If the foundation cracks or crumbles under the weight and stress, the house could crack and fall apart. It's the same with our lives. Sadly, most of us use ourselves as the foundation of our lives. Everything rests on what we can do. My brother used his family as his life foundation. A little over 3 years after his wife left him, he died, at age 51. He had founded his life on shifting sand. No human is solid enough to be our foundation.. Jesus revealed to us, if we are to stand amidst the storms of life, our foundation must be total reliance on God, our loving Father.

There is no stronger foundation. We rest our whole lives on His shoulders as our heavenly Father, when we ask Him, rather than charge on and try to do everything ourselves. Doing it all ourselves limits us to our abilities. That's a pretty weak foundation for a whole life. But, between us and God, we've got pretty much all the power in eternity. Resting on Him gives our foundation unlimited strength to hold up any size building in any condition. Unfortunately, many of us who believe in God just stop at asking and then wait for him to do everything. That's not what Jesus said to do. He said ask, seek and knock. We can't just wait. If we believe it's coming, we need to seek it. If we believe He's opening doors we'd better be knocking. How can we do otherwise if we believe His Word?

So we're building a square and strong foundation in Him, now it needs to be level.
