Jesus Walks On Water is possibly the most well-known lesson in the Bible. This episode is the example Peter sets for leadership in God's kingdom...a quality we can all have.

Jesus Walks On Water

Harmony Of The Gospels Series 19, Mt 14:23-33 (Mk 6:45-56, Jn 6:15-21)

"After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God’s Son!"

Those of you who are new to following Jesus now know where the Phrase "walks on water" comes from. I remember as a teenager pondering the reality of this story and recognizing I didn't have enough faith to pull it off. I'm encouraged by the fact that, of the many who have bragged at the size of their faith since then, not one of them has done it either. If you want more information on how this miracle applies to our lives today, here are the top selling books about Jesus walking on water.  Our study, today, is simple, yet as hard as anything we've ever pondered. This issue is as hard as understanding salvation, because it's not something we can understand. Our minds can grasp that we're not good enough for God, but then we go on to invent an impossible set of good behaviors to "earn" God. That's called religion. We can't mentally grasp why a God that's impossible for us to reach could love us enough to reach for us. Our study is like that. How do you define faith? It takes faith to leap past religious understanding and grab the gift of mercy from Jesus Christ. Yet, even that faith comes from God.

We're challenged in the US, now, to get over the fear of terrorism and go about our lives. I'm challenged, now, to get over the fear of not reaching enough people through our websites, and do what it takes to build our ministry to the next level. What's got you blocked? Is it fear of rejection by someone you're attracted to? Are you so afraid of what your teenager might be involved in that you can't talk to them? Is it a gang in school that has you so scared that you'll do what they say? Are you so afraid of losing your job that you can't do your job? Are you so insecure about world events that you can't think about the things you must do, and the people you must love today? Maybe God's placed something on your heart for you to do that's impossible, and you're afraid to start. This, ultimately, is where we're all called to live, in the impossible, or rather, the miraculous. We're all in the same boat. In fact, it's the same boat the disciples were in.

They were desperately rowing against the howling wind in the middle of a lake in the middle of a pitch-dark night, and their Master was who-knows-where, not knowing or caring that they were going to die. At that moment, they saw a ghost, walking on the water, which didn't help things in the fear department if you know what I mean. Then Peter comes up with an A-1, prize-winning stupid statement. By this point in their association, the disciples surely already know Peter is gifted for stupid statements. After all, how long does it take for you to size up a new acquaintance? This, Peter, says to the ghost, "tell me to come out to you." If I were one of the disciples I'd be happy he didn't say, "Tell us to come." Can you imagine? As if things weren't bad enough, the ghost says, come. Now the disciples must be getting the clue that this was Jesus, their Master, but that's when they begin to be stretched to a point of no return, where reality is never the same.
