Understand The Sermon On The Mount-B2

Continued from Understand Sermon On The Mount-B1

3. The Solution: We can find the solution to this dilemma in Jesus Christ. In the very words that some use to imprison themselves and others in empty legalism we can find the keys to set us free. In these words Jesus assures us of eternal life and fulfills the law.

A. Eternal Life Assured: Vs 19 "Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." How is this assurance? Jesus is telling us even if we break the Law and teach others to do the same, we will still be in the kingdom of heaven. Don't get me wrong! I'm not teaching anyone to disobey God. We must strive to lean more and more on Jesus to become ever more capable of living up to His high calling, but when you fail…don't be so hard on yourself. John wrote to followers of Jesus, 'if you claim to be without sin, you're a liar.' Peter said in a meeting of the early church leaders that it's impossible to keep the Law. Paul openly admitted he couldn't keep from sinning even though he didn't want to. These are Apostles! Paul also wrote that there is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus.

Does this mean we can go and willfully disobey God? No!!! Paul didn't let himself off the hook. He also wrote that he would punish and beat his body into submission, and that God gives us a way out of temptation to keep from sinning. The way it all works together is this:

We strive to obey His commands, but when we fail, we're merciful. Jesus is about mercy.

B. Law Fulfilled: Vs 17 "I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law. How is it that He can tell us to be perfect just like God? Paul gives us the answer in Ro 3:21-24 "But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."

This is how our righteousness can exceed the Pharisees, because Pharisees claim to be all that through their own effort, which the Bible says is impossible, but, through faith in Jesus we acquire His righteousness. This is how we take on the perfection of God, because God lives in us and makes it so. Not that we have accomplished anything, but that God takes our faith and counts it as righteousness, just as He's been doing for over 4,000 years.

Jesus is saying, "Come to me and I'll give you my righteousness."

Dear Lord, Thank you for your marvelous gift of righteousness. Thank you that we don't have to live in the compulsive, religious jail of the Pharisee, that you have freed us to live in your mercy. If anyone is receiving this and is bound by religion, we ask you to free them right now, and pour your mercy and love all over them. If anyone has come to doubt his relationship with you because of past or present sin or temptation, assure them now that they are children of the Most High. Let them know that you have forgiven them and are giving them the power to live in your righteousness. Let them know you'll be there to forgive them the next time they mess up, just like you are for me. If anyone has not received you, give them the faith right now to accept you into their lives and live in your mercy. Thank you, Father. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
