Bible studies in Acts Chapter 23 cover Paul, Sadducees and Pharisees, Claudius Lysias Role and more.  The questions are designed for personal or group inductive style Bible study and discussion.

Acts Chapter 23

For more information on the early church, see recent books on the Book Of Acts.

Paul, Sadducees and Pharisees,  Acts 23:1-18:

1.  Was this the same Sanhedrin that tried Jesus, Peter and James and condemned Jesus and James to death?

2.  Why do you feel it was significant that Paul "looked straight at them"?

3.  What do you thing Paul meant by "whitewashed wall"?  Can you think of any other time religious leaders in the Bible were accused of being whitewashed?

4.  Give examples from your experience of "whitewashed" religious leaders.

5.  Why do you feel the Pharisees and Sadducees would fight over the resurrection of the dead?

6.  If you had to choose between Pharisee and Sadducee, which would you be?  Why?

7.  What are some of the modern topics that seem to cause Christians to fight with each other?

8.  Do you feel any of these are important enough to cause friction between brothers and sisters in Christ?

9.  When you consider the plot to kill Paul, what modern religious groups have killed people because they disagreed?

10.  Historically, have any Christian groups done this?  (think...Crusades, Inquisition)

11.  Give reasons why you feel it's (right or wrong) to kill people who don't believe as you do in Jesus.

Claudius Lysias Role, Acts 23:19-35:

1.  How do you feel the behavior of Claudius Lysias compares with the reputation of Roman soldiers?

2.  Why would Claudius tell Paul's nephew not to tell anyone?

3.  Do you feel it was normal to use 200 soldiers to transport one prisoner?

4.  Can you imagine needing 200 soldiers to defend against 40 men (even if they had found out Paul was being transported)?

5.  Is there anything in the letter to Governor Felix that suggests why Claudius is being so cautious?

6.  Based on the letter, was there any reason for Paul to be in jail?

7.  If Paul had to choose between his own countrymen and religious leaders or soldiers who were total strangers, which would he choose, and why?

8.  Have you ever had circumstances where you felt treated better by outsiders than by Christian brothers and sisters?

9.  If so, what do you feel causes this treatment?
